Section 1: Content
a) Describe the events in your film:
My film is a Turkish comedy thriller. It takes place in a house as the three girls work as house cleaners to earn a living. During the beginning of our short film, they will be skipping Hainault in the dark hearing noises and getting scared to then having them gasp and wake up the next day obliviously. there will be a collage of all three girls introducing themselves with the song shik shak shok as they dance together they will be introduced one by one as of waking up in there bed room. they will make there way to the house they are assigned with to then finding themselves in a twisted hole of what they gather as dark demonic energy.
b)Describe each key character using the angles of article approach:
main characters:
Deliha-she is the eldest, seen as the big sister.
Ziliha- she discovers the circle with the dark energy and spirt to what they later on assume is black magic.
Aliya-she is the lost one but helps Deliha discover that Ziliha has consumed the negative and possessive energy.
The house owner- simply seen as there is a plot twist towards the end and the real question will be could the house owner be put up to this or was it one of the "sisters" cleaners that had put a spell out of spite and jealousy.
Section two: Narrative
a) Act one:
1) state of equilibrium: Cleaners make way to the house to have found a letter left over from the house owner to clean up and leave around a specific time. 2) event that disrupts equilibrium: As they walk into the room, they discovered the circle of salt with the candles and the cultural conspiracies start. The three girls freak out and start asking there own questions praying it isn't what they assume it is.
Act two: After reassuring themselves, one of the three girls experience out of the ordinary behaviour that makes the other two girls think she is going insane. The girl experiences unexplainable things such as her seeing a bloody hand scrapping down a mirror as a dripping print. The "possessed "girl (ZILIHA) then starts over thinking on why the two girls aren't believing her when she is claiming that there is something wrong to then finding herself blaming one of the girls to have done some dark magic on her.3) the main protagonist recognises that the equilibrium has been disrupted: The Plot twist the other girl Deliha starts to put two and two together after even herself finding doubt that maybe Aliya was doing some magic to then realise it was all a set up from he house owner and he had put them in a trance in the Hainault forest which interlinks with the very first opening scene. The disaster is lead to have believe that there is no escape and it starts reaching ziliha. 4) Protagonist attempts to recify this in order to restore equilibrium: its now up to Deliha to find a solution to help out her two sisters by going back to the house and blowing out the candle that was left behind lit up within the broken circle of salt... cliff hanger...
Act three: 5: Equilibrium is restored but, because casual transformations have occurred, there are differences from the original equilibrium: the ending isn't an end, there is a cliff hanger on questions such as was it truly the house owner or was it DELIHA genuinely trying to help out her sisters or she was so jealous she was behind it all.
Our story will be told using non linear structure as the beginning is a scene that is explained later on and happens in the middle of the taster, on the way to clean the house. Three narrative devices are : 1)flash back/flash forward which in our case will be both as of the interlinking scene with the opening sequence.2)Repetition of scenes which is when Deliha puts two and two together. 3)Red hearing which is when Ziliha claims one of the girls are doing black magic.
section 3) Genre:
thriller conventions :
one thriller convention that will be used is music. This is an important role seen as music intensifies the scenes and help change the atmospheres completely. Music is used throughout every scene unless it is to create a dramatic scene with suspense. This will be used in our opening sequence during the beginning through Hainault, it will e used when there will be introducing of character in the bedroom and just thought the scenes. Diegetic and non diegetic sounds will be used no matter what. Another thriller convention would be used is the element of essential props such as the main prop candles, roses and salt but more leaning towards the costumes. The outfits that are designed and will be worn is what demonstrates along with the music of the culture the is surrounding the comedy side. The props also denote to the audience what the culture is about such as head scarfs, baggy shalwar bottoms, Gold earrings and even the belly dancing tie at the waist fabric. A final convention would be lighting during the whole opening sequence. The lighting also helps create the tension around the atmosphere and impacts majorly around the scenes. The lighting is what gives the scenes the thriller effect. The lighting will be used in my film in the first opening scene where there will be a collage in Hainault forest where the crackling noses will come from around with the sudden lights flashing which will be edited.
The sub-genre that would fit into our opening sequence is a comedy Thriller along with the Turkish culture. This is well suited for my open sequence seen as the main three characters are very old fashioned traditional Turkish culture which will be the comedy side of our short film. The thriller aspect will depend on the enigma side and everything that comes with the broken salt circle and the conspiracy theories within the Turkish culture.
Section 4) Style:long shot short show wide shot:
one thriller camera convention is long shot. This is due to the fact the long enigma behind the long shot in some teens will build tension and worry to the audience. It allows the atmosphere to impact the audience. This will be shown in long shot when the three girls enter the house for the very first time. they tour around which also makes he audience feel the atmosphere as they feel like they are walking in themselves. the other thriller camera convention is close up shot. This will be shown in Hainault when the girls walk through the trees and find themselves all back to back with the camera going 360 around them when they get startled by the cracking in the woods. the close up shot can really outline the features of worry in therefore and makes the audience feel like they are there as well.
one thriller editing convention is transitions. We believe that transitions are very essential seen as it is only two minutes. Transitions will help it be seen as a opening sequence and not a trailer. Transitions from comedy to then the thriller side. The transition is what will help with the enigma at the end within leaving it in a successful cliff hanger. Another thriller editing convention is jump cuts, this shows allows the shorting period of time to be shown which saves time with the filming scenes that would have ended up being cut off seen as we only have a couple of minutes to present everything. Jump cut will be shown in our thriller film when the girls wake up all of a sudden in there bed after the screen had gone blank in Hainault when they were back to back hearing the twigs break.
two thriller sound convention is dietetic and non diegetic. Non diegetic sound is what raw sound that is heard and made on set. for example, hearing a twig being stepped on can be done and will be done on set however, we will then use diegetic sound to enhance the motions and intensify the scenes. Diegetic scenes will mainly be used when adding thriller music or mysterious music when it comes to seeing the Circe of salt and black candle.
one thriller mise-en-scene convention is the costumes as mentioned before because of the culture within the dress sense, the jewellery as well. The most important would be the costumes. As soon as they are seen in the costumes and the music is playing, it will automatically be interpreted by the audience as a old fashion style and cultural aspect of the characters. Another thriller mise-en-scene convention is the sets, if the set of them with the twigs cracking. was at for example a fun fair then it wouldn't be on the thriller theme side but rather a fun and entertainment side hence why it is essential to have the best locations and sets and for our case the sets will e in the trees of the location which is the most due place within the lighting as well together it to look like the atmosphere that we are trying to create.
Section 5) Brief interpretation:
In the brief that was given it mentions "the first two minutes .. as a taster". Our thriller will meet these needs seen as there is a difference between a taster and Trailor and by that we will make sure there is enough footage that is cut down to two minutes but is filmed in a way that there is more to come but it isn't random bits in a film (like a Trailor).
The second quote is "thriller movie", our film is shot in a spooky and quiet dark atmosphere in the house, the setting of Hainault between all the trees and the crackling sound of the twig is enough to show already that there is a sense of thriller included.
"Target audience of 16-24 years old". This quote will be demonstrated and promoted by the fact that the acters are all of the age requirement although they will act older. Our short film will ensure that it is appropriate to the target audience with the language and disclaimers we will put out.
