Post Production Techniques - Annotated Screenshots

Sound Editing:
  • Adding music
One technique that we used was adding in background music and sound effects. This was done by converting the youtube link to all the audios used and converting them into mp3 files. This helped emphasise certain scenes to make them more intense.

  • Fading audio

Another technique we used was fading out some audio files used, in order to highlight the transition to another scene; or to effectively switch to another soundtrack, without any awkward pausing.

  • Adding in sounds that were suggested from the sound effects board

This technique used is adding sounds that came from the sound effects board. The sounds were converted into mp3 files; before being imported into Final Cut Pro; where they were added into the background of a few scenes. An example with this video to a song we used was applied to a scene in order to make it more playful and authentic to Turkish culture.

Video Editing:

  • Changing the lighting for certain scenes

One technique we've done was put a filter effect over certain scenes (specifically the last couple scenes of the film). This allows the audience to know that there is a tense atmosphere.

  • Transitioning the scenes into black
This technique is when we need to switch to a new fresh scene in the opening sequence. We used a black overlay and used it as a way to create a suspenseful pause before diverting to another scene.

Graphics/Text Editing:

  • Adding in the title and production credits of "The Black candle"

This technique is used by choosing from a series of fonts given by Final Cut Pro. We decided to use this type of text which animates by each of the letters fading in and flickering; in order to give a creepy, eerie tone to the audience.

  • Green screen of the orb

Another big technique we used was adding a green screen video of the orb. As the orb helps carry the storyline, we added a green screen above the characters, and altered its original colour to fit the colour palette for the "Black Candles".
